Kitchen Cabinet Design Ideas & Inspiration

Kitchen Cabinet Design

If you’re considering a kitchen remodel, the first thing that comes to mind is likely cabinets. After all, they’re usually the bulk of the expense for most kitchens, and they also take up the most space in the room.

That said, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with all of the potential options at your disposal. Where to start? If you’re looking for kitchen cabinet design ideas and inspiration, you’ve come to the right place.

Let’s talk about some of the latest cabinet trends.

Kitchen Cabinet Styles

Kitchen Cabinet Style

What’s your cabinet style? Traditional or modern? Rustic or vintage?

Traditional styles tend to use decorative doors with raised or recessed paneling, special finishes or distressing techniques. Usually those styles include cottage, country, old world, or Shaker. More modern styles often use European-style sheet-glass and lacquered wood.

If you prefer the vintage or retro look, you’ll want to choose cabinets with decorative moldings and beadboard or bold colors. Rustic styles use wood beams and exposed wood grain.

But wait — there’s more! We haven’t even gotten to cabinet door styles yet. Some of the most common styles include:

  • Flat-panel: A flat center panel with raised outer edges
  • Raised-panel: A raised center panel with a surrounding profile or contour
  • Slab: Smooth with no panels, contours or accents
  • Accent: Decorative cabinet doors that are usually only used on a few select cabinets

One style trend on the rise: Upper cabinets that don’t have any crown moldings on top. This creates a clean, sleek look.

Kitchen Cabinet Colors

Kitchen Cabinet Colors

The color of your kitchen cabinets sets the tone for the entire room. It can brighten a closed-off space lacking natural light, or it can add much-needed contrast to a large, open area. A classic choice, of course, is white or off-white cabinets (you can’t go wrong). For a bolder, contemporary look, try black cabinets. You could even use a mix of black and white, with stainless steel fixtures and appliances.

Another classic choice that remains popular year-to-year is espresso — a rich, elegant deep brown that pairs well with warm walls and neutral flooring.

One color trend on the rise: Speaking of warm colors, warm finishes are actually on the rise. More people are ditching the grays and whites and opting for soft wood tones instead.

Kitchen Cabinet Storage

Kitchen Cabinet Storage

The look of your kitchen cabinets is only one part of the equation — the storage is the other. How can you maximize your space to hide (or display) your kitchen essentials?

Talk to your kitchen designer when deciding which storage solutions to add. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Pull-out spice-rack cabinet
  • Custom cabinet with swing-out spice rack on the interior
  • Lazy susans that add efficiency to corner cabinets
  • Roll-outs (or pull-outs) in tall pantry cabinets
  • Pull-out cutting boards
  • Large, deep drawer cabinets for pots and pans
  • Open, floating shelving

One storage trend on the rise: Trash can pull-out cabinets hide unflattering garbage bins from view in a functional, discreet way.

There’s a lot to consider when designing your kitchen remodel. Your cabinets will be the highlight of the space and a huge reflection of your home’s style and functionality. Take a look at all of your options and see which ones you’re most drawn to. Your kitchen renovation is sure to come together with the right cabinet style, color and storage.
