Wondering how long certain areas of your home are going to be torn apart during a renovation? How long will you have to endure construction and drywall dust? Or how long can you expect to go without a kitchen?
The short answer: It depends. The long answer breaks out what type of home remodel you’re doing. There’s no one-answer-fits-all because the scope of the project and the type of room involved all play a factor.
For example, a full kitchen gut and remodel is going to take longer than a living room cosmetic update of new flooring, crown molding, and paint. A master suite addition is going to take longer than updating a small hallway bathroom.
Do you see where we’re going with this? Let’s look at the answer depending on what type of project you’re doing.
Cosmetic Updates
If you’re simply enhancing the look of a room with new fixtures, a fresh coat of paint, and/or a basic flooring replacement, it’ll probably take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. More extensive cosmetic updates, like installing a new stairway railing and spindles, may require a few weeks. Painting your kitchen cabinets may also take a few weeks. The length of time it takes to complete cosmetic updates varies depending on the number of updates and the size of your space.
Medium-Sized Projects
More in-depth projects include tasks like:
- Full kitchen remodels
- Adding a new fireplace (or removing an old one ) in a living room
- Building an addition or bump-out
- Adding a new garage to the side of the house
These home remodeling projects can be lengthier and take several weeks to 6 months. Home additions and building garages take the longest on this list, since construction starts from scratch. Full kitchen remodels can also take several months because there are waiting periods between the kitchen layout design, ordering, installation, countertop measurement, and placement.
Large Projects
Time-intensive home renovation projects may include elements like:
- Foundation repair
- Structural repair
- House lifting
- Second story additions
These are huge endeavors and you can expect them to take 6 months to over a year to complete. Even though they take awhile, they’re worth it in the long run and can make a huge impact on the quality of your home.
