For most people, the crucial factor when deciding to pursue a home remodel is cost. Do you have the budget for the home project you’re dreaming of? Or maybe you’re not even that far along yet — maybe you have no idea how much your vision will cost to produce.
That’s OK. After all, you don’t know what you don’t know. But you’re clearly doing some research now, which is a great starting point.
A lot of factors go into pricing a home renovation project. The size of the space, the materials required, and the extent of the renovation, to name a few. For example, is it a complete overhaul (down to the studs in the walls) or more of a cosmetic, surface update? The latter will cost less than the former.
A full kitchen gut and remodel is going to cost more than a living room cosmetic update of new flooring, crown molding, and paint. A full master suite addition is going to cost more than just bumping out the existing master bedroom.
So while we can’t give you exact numbers until one of our Design Consultants sees the space and learns more specific details from you, we CAN give you some price ranges. Keep in mind that these are average home remodel costs, which means yours could fall somewhere outside this range.
Kitchen Remodel Cost
A kitchen remodel can cost anywhere from $75,000 to 175,000+. To stay on the lower end of that price range, you’d be looking at a small kitchen “pull and replace” or a partial kitchen remodel including new countertops, backsplash and lighting. The more you change about the kitchen layout, including knocking down walls and adding custom cabinetry, the higher the cost.
The extent of plumbing and electrical work matters, too. For example, will plumbing lines need to be moved to a different area in the room to accommodate a new kitchen layout or placement of the sink? Size also plays a factor in the price, since remodeling a large space will mean more cabinetry, flooring, and a higher price tag.
Master Bathroom Remodel Cost
Renovating or adding a master bathroom usually costs between $60,000 to $100,000+. Similar to kitchens, this depends on how much cabinetry and flooring is required, whether electrical or plumbing needs moved/added, and the price of other materials you select (like a whirlpool or soaking tub versus a shower/tub combo.) Hall Bathroom Remodel Cost
For a renovation involving a guest bathroom, you can expect a cost of $30,000 to $50,000. Think of this project as a smaller version of a master bathroom, with similar considerations in terms of materials, cabinetry, plumbing, and electrical.
Basement Remodel Cost
Finishing a basement from scratch? Or renovating an existing finished basement? You can expect costs to range between $80,000 to $200,000+ for a basement remodel. Again, size plays a huge role here. Some clients choose to do a partially finished basement, in which costs decrease. But if you’re finishing the entire basement, which requires more labor and materials, the cost goes up. Another cost factor is whether you’re water-proofing your basement and/or fixing former water damage.
Something else we always like to remind clients of is that the materials (such as cabinetry, flooring, tile, etc.) don’t care where they’re going. We often think things should cost less because it’s “just a basement,” but the fact of the matter is, some basement finishes cover the same square footage of an entire house and this can make the cost quite high.
Room Addition Remodel Cost
Building an extra room onto your house, whether it’s a sunroom, extra living space, master suite, or something else, can bring it closer to “dream home” status. It can give you additional square footage you want without having to pack up and move to a new home. That being said, a room addition project costs usually start around $100,000+. This varies greatly depending on the type and size of the room addition.
Hopefully these cost estimates give you a better idea of what to expect when remodeling your home. But remember that these numbers vary and the best way to gauge your costs is to get a quote specific to your project.
