Churchill Downs Inspired Patio

These clients wanted this outdoor space to have a high-end feeling to match the rest of their home and property—the backyard is home to a beautiful pool and well-maintained, thoughtful landscaping. They own several horses, so we decided to use Churchill Downs as an inspiration for the structure.

BEFORE

The existing pergola on this home wasn’t meeting these homeowners’ needs for many reasons. The appearance was too casual, it wasn’t fully covered and wasn’t attached to the home.

PLANS & RENDERINGS

The design of the roof created a structural challenge. It couldn’t be framed like a typical hip roof because it required additional support in the corners of the opening for the open clerestory. We created angled flitch beams with custom shaped & welded steel beams. This piece of framing needed to be designed on site to fit perfectly into the roof and the steel couldn’t be fabricated until the trusses were built as they needed to match up exactly.
