Planning your Kitchen: Design and Layout

Tips for 30 Minute Meals
Keep it simple
  • Use simple, attractive place mats that can go in the dishwasher
  • Use only flatware needed
  • Use only dishwasher-safe dishes and glasses (save the others for special occasions)
  • Relax and enjoy your meal - good conversation, soft music, and comfortable lighting all contribute to make your meal healthier and more satisfying
Plan For Leftovers
  • Cook enough turkey breast, roast chicken, pasta salad, etc. for another meal.
Ask For Help
  • Be specific - “Will you please set the table” and “Get the drinks,” is better than a flustered, “Will someone get in here and help me!”
Use the correct cookware
  • Size - use a pan or skillet large enough to hold food to be cooked, but not too large. It should fit the burner or overlap slightly. The bottom should be heavy enough not to buckle.
  • Lids - lids should fit tightly on each pan
  • Number - limit number and have a specific place for each - a small, medium, and large pan, skillet, and a dutch oven should be sufficient for most meals. You may want to supplement with a griddle, wok, or other special-use items.
